More than 4 in 5 physicians now use artificial intelligence in their professional practice, and 92% of physicians want additional AI training, an American Medical Association survey found.
American Medical Association’s 2026 Physician Survey on Augmented Intelligence surveyed 1,692 physicians across specialties, practices and career stages between Jan. 15 and Feb. 2.
Here are six survey findings.
1. More than 80% of physicians currently use AI in a professional context, double the share reported in 2023.
2. The number of use cases have grown from 1.1 in 2023 to 2.3 in 2025. Physicians are most excited about AIs use case in documentation and summarization applications.
3. Over three-quarters of physicians say AI provides an advantage in their ability to care for patients, up from 65% in 2023.
4. About 40% of physicians remain equally excited and concerned about AI. Concerns were highest for the tools’ impact on patient privacy and patient-physician relationships.
5. Physicians assume patients are using AI for health questions and most think that is OK. They said AI use for general questions about health and medications are beneficial, but think patients should avoid AI for clinical judgement tasks. Nearly half said they never want patients using AI for interpretation of radiology or pathology results.
6. Among physicians, 85% want to be consulted or be responsible for adoption of AI, and 92% said they want more education and training on AI.
