Medscape surveyed more than 1,200 residents from June 20 through July 7. All participants were enrolled in U.S. medical resident programs. Here are five aspects of their work that residents identified as the most rewarding.
1. Gratitude/relationships with patients (67 percent of residents in years 1 to 4 post-med school and 61 percent of those in years 5 to 8 found this rewarding.)
2. Being very good at what I do/Finding answers, diagnoses (65 percent for years 1 to 4; 71 percent for years 5 to 8)
3. Being proud of being a physician (42 percent for 1 to 4; 41 percent for 5 to 8)
4. Knowing that I’m making the world a better place (39 percent for 1 to 4; 37 percent for 5 to 8)
5. The potential to make good money at a job I like (36 percent for 1 to 4; 43 percent for 5 to 8)
