Here are the four main leadership traits he believes medical schools and hospitals should help physicians develop.
1. Respected by peers. In order to motivate, inspire and steer physicians effectively, leaders need to be trusted, have strong moral principles and be respected by their peers.
2. A knack for communication and conflict management. Physicians are a vocal group, and they expect their ideas, opinions and input to be addressed. Physician leaders need strong listening skills and the ability to assimilate ideas quickly. They also need to quickly resolve conflicts, not only among physicians but also among administrators and staff. Leaders can resolve conflicts without alienating team members who may have voiced dissenting opinions.
3. A clear and compelling vision for the organization. Leaders see the big picture and can clearly communicate organizational goals and strategies to physicians. Physician leaders think innovatively and try new strategies to solve problems.
4. A sense of accountability and sound judgment. Leaders must live with the consequences of their decisions, and effective physician leaders will accept responsibility for the actions of their team under their direction. This behavior links back to the first characteristic: It allows the physician to build respect and trust. Team members appreciate a leader who doesn’t throw them under a bus.
