10 emerging ethical issues medical schools should address

As healthcare and health technologies change, so do medical ethics. The American Medical Association recently provided a list of the top emerging ethical issues in medicine today that should be addressed in medical school curriculum to prepare future physicians.

Here are the AMA’s recommendations, which are based on the Romanell Report on medical ethics.

1. Self-awareness and professional identity

2. Social media presence

3. Reporting concerns about colleagues’ impairment, incompetence or unethical behavior

4. Medical student participation in patient care

5. Gifts from patients and patient philanthropy

6. Patient decision-making ability and surrogate decision making

7. Cross-cultural competence and awareness of racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare

8. Managing conflicts of interest associated with research, clinical trials and financial relationships

9. Reproductive ethics in maternal-fetal medicine

10. Personal values in the clinical encounter
