The action plan updates the original version issued in 2009 with new sections on infection reduction in ambulatory surgery centers, end-stage renal disease facilities and long-term care facilities. The new action plan also includes a goal of influenza vaccination for 75 percent of healthcare personnel by 2015.
The updated HAI action plan adds a focus on ventilator-associated events in acute-care hospitals to the nine five-year target goals established in the 2009 action plan. The CDC, Critical Care Societies Collaborative and other partners recently created a new approach to VAE, moving to a broader measure than only ventilator-associated pneumonia. The HAI action plan will include a specific measure and reduction goal for VAE in future years.
