Healthcare Coalition Urges Congress to Fund HAI Tracking, Research Programs

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology led a coalition of 30 health groups in calling on Congress to fully fund the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Healthcare Safety Network and the Prevention Epicenters Program in the FY 2014 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Appropriations bill.

The coalition sent a letter to House and Senate Appropriations Committees leaders asking them to support $31.5 million for the NHSN, which collects information on healthcare-associated infections, and the Prevention Epicenters Program, which conducts research on HAI prevention.

"These programs should be a priority, even in this climate of limited financial resources, because they are uniquely positioned to protect patients and the public from disease and death related to healthcare-associated infections and to detect the transmission of infections that are highly resistant to antibiotics," the letter stated.
