The rate of Americans without health insurance grew to 8.5 percent, or 27.5 million, in 2018. That’s compared to 7.9 percent, or 25.6 million Americans, the year before.
However, some states have uninsured rates lower than the national average. Here are the nine states, plus the District of Columbia, with the lowest uninsured rates in 2018:
1. Massachusetts: 2.8 percent
2. District of Columbia: 3.2 percent
3. Vermont: 4 percent
4. Hawaii: 4.1 percent
5. Rhode Island: 4.1 percent
6. Minnesota: 4.4 percent
7. Iowa: 4.7 percent
8. Connecticut: 5.3 percent
9. Michigan: 5.4 percent
10. New York: 5.4 percent
