Hawaii updates vaccine requirements

Hawaii's Department of Health has updated student vaccine requirements for the first time since 2001, according to The Hawaii Tribune-Herald.

The updated requirements will take effect for all students entering Hawaii schools starting July 1, 2020. Children in childcare and preschools will be required to have hepatitis A and PCV immunizations; those entering kindergarten will have to receive the hepatitis A vaccine. Students beginning the seventh grade will have to have DTaP, HPV and MCV immunizations.

"These are recommendations that most physicians and clinics have been following for a decade or more," said Health Director Bruce Anderson. "We are at increased risk in Hawaii for contagious diseases because of large number[s] of visitors."
