“Harvard University Health Services has been working closely with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Cambridge Public Health Department to track and monitor the situation,” wrote Paul Barreira, MD, director of HUHS, in an email to community members, according to the Crimson.
In the spring 2016, 66 mumps cases were identified on the Harvard campus. The outbreak resulted in the quarantine of infected students.
Mumps can cause painful, swollen salivary glands. It is a highly transmissible virus contracted through person-to-person contact.
