Kent Brantly, MD, and Nancy Writebol were transferred to Emory from Liberia in early August. They were both treated with doses of an experimental drug called ZMapp. It is not known, however, if the drug helped cure the disease. Emory physicians say the discharged patients are no longer contagious, according to the report.
According to the World Health Organization, around 1,350 people have died from Ebola in the current outbreak this year. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that there have been 68 Ebola scares in the United States. One potential Ebola patient in the United States is at Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento (Calif.) Medical Center.
The CDC has also released updated guidelines for evaluation of patients suspected of having the Ebola virus and an interim guidance for environmental infection control in hospitals related to the Ebola virus.
