Such hospitalizations, costing more than $1 billion a year, involve drug-induced delirium, poisoning or overdose by codeine and other opiate-based medications and withdrawal from drugs.
In comparison, the number of hospital admissions for these conditions declined by 11 percent for ages 18-44, while it grew by 96 percent for ages 65-84 and 87 percent for ages 85 and older.
