Cleveland Clinic-MetroHealth Regional Trauma System Decreased Mortality Rate

The Northern Ohio Trauma System announced evidence showing improved outcomes from its regional trauma care service.

MetroHealth in Cleveland and Cleveland Clinic partnered to create NOTS, a regionalized trauma system, in 2010. Under NOTS, the most serious trauma patients are treated in the area's only adult Level 1 trauma center at MetroHealth. Patients who need less serious trauma care are treated in northeast Ohio's only Level II trauma centers at Cleveland Clinic's Fairview Hospital in Cleveland and Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights.

A four-year study of 30,000 trauma patients before and after the regionalization of trauma care revealed NOTS saved more than 100 lives since its creation. The mortality rate for traumas in Cleveland dropped 53 percent — from 5.7 percent before NOTS was created to 2.7 percent after.
