Data in this report was collected by hospitals participating in NHSN from Jan.-Dec. 2010 and reported to CDC by July 7, 2011. This report updates previously published data from NHSN and provides contemporary comparative rates.
This report, which includes data from 2,473 hospitals, reveals the incidence of central line-associated bloodstream infections, central line utilization ratios, the incidence of catheter-associate urinary tract infections, the number of ventilator-associated pneumonia cases, all by hospital location, and more.
For instance, 914 CLABSIs occurred at 1,170 medical/surgical units with 15 beds or less. In addition, 1,226 CLABSIs occurred at 518 medical/surgical units with more than 15 beds. Medical/surgical units, regardless of number of beds, represented the greatest proportion of reported CLABSIs. Similar trends were found for CAUTIs.
