Evidence suggests melon produced and supplied by Indianapolis-based Caito Foods, including fresh-cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe and fresh-cut fruit medley products containing one of these melons “is a likely source of this multistate outbreak,” the CDC announced June 8.
Caito Foods recalled the affected products June 8. They were distributed to Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio and sold in clear, plastic containers at several large grocery chains.
The CDC and FDA warned residents in these eight states to dispose of any melon that may have been recalled. No deaths linked to the outbreak have been reported.
“Reports of illnesses linked to these products are under investigation, and Caito Foods is voluntarily recalling the products out of an abundance of caution,” the company stated.
Caito “has ceased producing and distributing these products as the company and FDA continue their investigation,” the company’s announcement stated.
