C. auris case count exceeds 750

The CDC reported 755 cases of Candida auris in the U.S., as of June 30.

There were 654 confirmed and 30 probable cases at the end of April. The number of confirmed cases has jumped to 725, while there are still 30 probable cases in the country.

Cases of the deadly emerging fungus have been reported in 12 states. New York, Illinois and New Jersey have experienced the highest number of cases, with each state reporting more than 100. New York has reported 355 confirmed cases.

Additionally, 1,474 patients have been found to be colonized with C. auris.

C. auris cases have also been reported in several countries around the world.

C. auris, a type of yeast, is often multidrug-resistant and causes bloodstream infections, wound infections and ear infections. A recent study shows that patients heavily colonized with C. auris can contaminate their surroundings by shedding the fungus from their skin.
