‘Be a compass, not a map’: Jefferson’s President on what integrated system leadership requires

Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health operates one of the few academic integrated delivery and financing systems in the country — a structure that aligns care delivery, financing, and academic medicine advancement. To run smoothly, the multifarious model requires advanced skills of its leaders.

“Being in Philadelphia, I’m often reminded of Ben Franklin’s quote that nothing is certain but death and taxes,” Baligh Yehia, MD, president of Jefferson Health and executive vice president of Jefferson, said in an upcoming episode of Becker’s “Clinical Leadership Podcast.” “We can add uncertainty to that list. Healthcare is full of it, and leaders who are comfortable navigating uncertainty — and managing it for their teams — are exactly who we look for. It’s more about being a compass than a map.”

Being a compass allows leaders to navigate complexity to find meaningful solutions, collaborate and rely on others to find better outcomes and more effectively communicate.

“The more effectively you convey your intent, what you’re trying to solve for, and bring people along on that journey, the more effectively you lead both teams and organizations,” he said.

Jefferson Health is one of the largest academic health systems in the Philadelphia region, with the health plan arm primarily serving government-sponsored insurance populations.
