Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Avera Health’s research arm, Avera Research Institute, is partnering with two South Dakota universities to establish a statewide research center backed by an $11.1 million National Institutes of Health award over five years.
The South Dakota Center for Advancing Clinical and Translational Research brings together Avera Research Institute, South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine, according to a Sept. 21 news release. The organizations will train and mentor researchers, support studies and build shared research resources across the state.
Potential research areas include diabetes and obesity, cancer prevention and screening, maternal health, mental health and substance use, veterans’ health, cognitive health and rural healthcare delivery.
SD-ACT is part of NIH’s Institutional Development Award program, which builds research capacity in 23 states and Puerto Rico. Under NIH eligibility rules, a state may hold only one active IDeA Clinical and Translational Research Network.
