AMA said it will expand existing efforts to advocate for state legislation or programs to remove non-medical exemptions from mandated pediatric vaccinations, according to a press release emailed to Becker’s.
The association’s pledge comes as the U.S. faces its highest annual measles case count since 1992. As of June 6, the CDC has reported 1,022 measles infections in 28 states.
Several states are reviewing legislation to enact stricter rules for vaccine exemptions amid surging measles infections. For example, Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bill in May that prohibits parents from seeking personal or philosophical exemptions for the MMR vaccine in school-aged children.
