A statement from Dr. Stack released late Thursday says data inaccuracies and difficulties with CMS’ processes grew in recent months and though the problems have been acknowledge, little has been done to address them.
“Most importantly, consumers visiting the Physician Compare website are likely to get a false impression that it provides accurate quality information for all physicians, when in fact, due to significant data problems, the newly added information covers only about 40,000 physicians,” Dr. Stack said.
Dr. Stack’s statement concludes with the affirmation that the AMA is a supporter of efforts toward transparency, but CMS’ physician outreach efforts regarding problems with performance calculations involving the Physician Quality Reporting System and Physician Compare have been insufficient.
“[T]oday’s action goes in the opposite direction — offering the public information that will lead consumers to draw faulty inferences about the quality of care that an individual physician or group provides,” he said.
