Composite items in AHRQ’s hospital survey on patient safety culture span 12 categories, including teamwork within units, organizational learning, management support for patient safety, overall perceptions of patient safety, feedback and communication about error, frequency of events reported, communication openness, teamwork across units, staffing and more.
More than 245,000 respondents representing 742 nonteaching hospitals rated every line item in the survey higher than the more than 322,000 respondents representing 386 teaching hospitals. For instance, 81 percent of nonteaching respondents reported a positive response regarding teamwork within units, compared to 78 percent of teaching respondents.
In addition, 67 percent of nonteaching respondents reported a positive response regarding overall perceptions of patient safety, compared to 63 percent of teaching respondents.
