AHA's Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellence initiative & The Joint Commission release patient falls prevention guide

The American Hospital Association's Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellence initiative and the Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare released a guide for hospitals focused on mitigating patient falls, according to an AHA News report.

The guide details the types of risks that lead to patient falls, the root causes for those risks and solutions to reduce them. It also includes several case studies highlighting individual hospitals and their patient fall prevention efforts.

The guide is based on data submitted by five hospitals participating in the Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare's preventing falls with injury project. These hospitals experienced a 62 percent reduction in the falls with injury rate and a 35 percent reduction in the patient falls rate.
