The resource will focus on the role of organizational culture in the success of patient and workforce safety initiatives and will identify clear actions healthcare leaders can take to create such a culture.

“In recent years, we have seen more evidence of how essential safety culture is in making healthcare safer, but you can’t just say to people, ‘Go fix your culture,'” said Tejal K. Gandhi, MD, president and CEO of NPSF. “Our goal is to provide senior healthcare leaders with a strategic and tactical plan. Working with ACHE will provide valuable perspectives and ensure that healthcare leaders are driving the solutions.”

ACHE and NPSF have already announced the co-chairs of the project. From ACHE’s board of governors is Charles D. Stokes, the executive vice president and COO of Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston. From NPSF’s Lucian Leape Institute is Gary S. Kaplan, MD, chair and CEO of Virginia Mason Health System in Seattle.

The expected release date of the safety culture playbook is in 2017.
