The AAP policy statement was published in Pediatrics and includes nine core principles of family-centered care; evidence that family-centered care can improve patient outcomes; the benefits of family-centered care for pediatricians and recommendations for how pediatricians can foster family-centered care.
Those recommendations include incorporation of the core concepts of family-centered care into professional practice; communication with family members to understand their unique insights and preferences for their child’s care and facilitation of networking for families with the same type of medical condition.
