833 deaths linked to Congo's Ebola outbreak: 4 updates

The Democratic Republic of Congo's health ministry reported 17 new Ebola cases April 17, which brings the outbreak total to 1,290, reports CIDRAP News.

Four updates:

1. The new cases occurred in the cities of Katwa, Butembo and Mandima — all current hotspots of the outbreak, which started in August 2018.

2. Of the 1,290 Ebola infections, 1,224 are confirmed. Health officials also reported 833 confirmed and probable deaths linked to the outbreak.

3. Officials are still investigating an additional 251 suspected cases, and 379 people have been cured.

4. Four more health workers contracted the virus, bringing the total number of infected workers to 89. One Ebola case occurred in a physician in the city of Beni, with 534 known contacts potentially exposed to the virus.
