Palliative care programs focus on treating pain, minimizing side effects and coordinating care. The Center to Advance Palliative Care recorded 658 palliative programs in hospitals in 2000, compared with 1,568 programs by 2009, according to the report.

The growth of these programs may be due to the United States’ aging population, according to the report.
