2019 has seen the greatest number of measles cases in the U.S. since 1992. Most cases have occurred in New York City and New York’s Rockland County, where there is a large Orthodox Jewish population, according to U.S. News & World Report. New York banned religious exemptions to vaccine laws June 13, and other states are considering similar measures.
The CDC has warned the U.S. could lose the measles elimination status it earned in 2000 if the outbreak continues throughout the summer and fall.
