3 Post-Intubation Practices That Can Decrease Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia

Recent research suggests three post-intubation practices can decrease rates of ventilator-associated pneumonia, according to a study published in the Journal of Nursing Care Quality.

For their study, researchers evaluated the effects of three post-intubation practices in hospital emergency rooms. The three practices are:

•    Oral care
•    Head-of-bed elevation
•    Suctioning above the endotracheal tube balloon

The researchers found implementation of these three practices led to an 83 percent decrease in ventilator-acquired pneumonia cases. They also found clinicians do not need to wait for the patient to be admitted to ICUs to begin these practices.
