The following are statistics on the frequency of inpatient surgery procedures for 2010. Data is from the National Hospital Discharge Survey 2010 and hosted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were 51.4 million inpatient surgeries performed in 2010:

  • Diagnostic ultrasound — 1.1 million procedures
  • Endoscopy of small intestine — 1.1 million procedures
  • Cardiac catheterizations — 1 million procedures
  • Total knee replacement — 719,000 procedures
  • Reduction of fracture — 671,000 procedures
  • Balloon angioplasty of coronary artery or coronary atherectomy — 500,00 procedures
  • Endoscopy of large intestine — 499,000 procedures
  • Hysterectomy — 498,000 procedures
  • Insertion of coronary artery stent — 454,000 procedures
  • Coronary artery bypass graft — 395,000 procedures
  • Total hip replacement — 332,000 procedures
