The nursing home workforce gained 3,300 jobs in June, bringing the total number of workers up to 1,586,600, the American Health Care Association said in a July 6 news release shared with Becker’s.
The association used the Bureau of Labor Statistics to find current nursing home workforce statistics. Here is what to know about the current state of the workforce:
1. Both nursing home staff turnover and temporary staff agency use have declined since 2022.
2. Nursing home and residential care facilities’ staffing is rebounding. Since the pandemic, the number of workers in nursing facilities has steadily risen. As of May, the industry employs about 3.49 million people, up from 2.96 million at the industry’s lowest point in January 2022.
3. On June 25, the Supreme Court ended Temporary Protected Status for Haitian and Syrian citizens, clearing the way for the federal government to deport hundreds of thousands of workers. The ruling puts more than 330,000 Haitians and more than 6,000 Syrians at risk of deportation, Americans for Immigrant Justice said. The nursing home industry relies heavily on immigrant labor, which makes up about 28% of the long-term care workforce.
4. By 2030, all 73 million Baby Boomers will be at least 65 years old. Meanwhile, a growing shortage of registered nurses and licensed practical nurses is projected by 2038.
