Nurse injured in accidental shooting at nursing home

A nurse was injured at a Tennessee nursing home after a gun was accidentally discharged, The Rogersville Review reported Dec. 2.

Travis Fields, Rogersville Police Department's public safety director, said police were initially dispatched to Signature Healthcare of Rogersville around 5:34 p.m. Dec. 1 in response to an active shooter complaint. They later discovered the gunshot was accidental.

A new resident, who is in his 80s, had brought the pistol into the nursing home in a bag of possessions.

"He had a bag with some property in it," Mr. Fields told the Review. "When they were checking him into the nursing home, the nurse was going through his bags and his clothes. He had had a .22 Derringer, and apparently it was cocked, and when she got ahold of it, it went off and shot her in the hand."

The nurse was transported to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.
