Number of high-performing nursing homes by state: US News

California has the most nursing homes ranked as high performing, followed by Pennsylvania, according to the 2024 "Best Nursing Homes" ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

The 2024 ranking features ratings for more than 15,000 nursing homes. Facilities were evaluated on patient and resident outcomes, such as infection rates, staffing levels, reliance on antipsychotic drugs, health inspection results and other indicators of quality.

Fewer than 5% of evaluated nursing homes meet both existing and newly proposed staffing requirements. Nursing homes that met both current and proposed standards were 54 times more likely to be rated a "Best Nursing Home" by U.S. News.
