Springville, N.Y.-based Bertrand Chaffee Hospital is planning to close its nursing home facility, a spokesperson confirmed to Becker’s on June 3.
“Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home announced that it will begin an orderly closure following approval from the New York State Department of Health,” the spokesperson said. “The facility will continue to provide all required services to residents while working closely with families, managed care plans, and the Department to ensure safe and appropriate relocation. This decision was made after a thorough review of the facility’s long-term sustainability. A combination of financial challenges, staffing shortages, and the significant capital needs of the aging physical plant contributed to the determination that continued operation is no longer feasible. The New York State Department of Health has approved an orderly closure plan, and we are committed to ensuring a safe and respectful transition for all residents.”
Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home has struggled with loss of revenue and employees in the last few years, ABC affiliate WKBW reported June 2. In 2024, the facility lost $800,000, and the number of employees fell from 115 to 91.
The union that represents 40 of the workers, 1199-SEIU, said it has not received a WARN notice regarding the closure, according to WKBW.
In May, the hospital announced its plan to renovate its emergency department and improve the facility’s critical infrastructure with $17.6 million. A certificate-of-need application was submitted to the health department.
Bertrand Chaffee has 24 beds and is one of the region’s smallest hospitals, The Buffalo News reported.
