Hospice care quality: Latest CMS data

CMS has analyzed data from more than 5,000 hospice agencies for its latest update to Care Compare. Care Compare, a consumer search tool for home health, hospice and other Medicare-reimbursed healthcare services, provides patients with information to make informed decisions about healthcare.

National hospice care quality data from April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, was published by the agency Feb. 19. Individual providers can use the national benchmarks to see how their facility’s performance measures up. 

The proportion of hospice patients who received each care measure:

  • Patients’ hospital and palliative care treatment preferences were noted: 99.5%
  • Patients’ beliefs and values were addressed: 98.5%
  • Patients received a hospice and palliative care pain screening: 98.3%
  • Patients received a hospice and palliative care pain assessment: 95.3%
  • Patients received a hospice and palliative care dyspnea screening: 99%
  • Patients received hospice and palliative care dyspnea treatment: 97.5%
  • Patients who received a bowel regimen when treated with an opioid: 91.5%
  • Patients for received all seven care processes: 91.9%
