CMS’s new risk-based survey process for skilled nursing facilities launched nationwide Sept. 8
CMS estimated that 1,560 nursing homes, or 12% of facilities, qualify for the new process and higher-performing designation. To qualify, a nursing home must meet several criteria quarterly, including a five-star overall facility rating on Care Compare, accurate data submission to CMS, zero citations indicating harm or substandard quality of care in the last survey cycle and no recent ownership changes. All facilities will be surveyed at least every 15 months.
The new process will focus fewer resources on higher-performing nursing homes so it can address issues at other facilities.
In 2023, CMS tested the process in a pilot program involving over 100 facilities across 22 states. It found the process “adequately and consistently identified noncompliance and risks to residents’ health and safety.”
