Omaha, Neb.-based Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital said three in 10 children currently treated at the hospital are there due to e-bike or e-scooter injuries, WOWT reported July 20.
Here is what to know.
1. Among e-bike or e-scooter injury patients, 30% to 50% sustained a brain injury, Brooke Murtaugh, brain injury program manager at Madonna Rehabilitation, told the news outlet.
2. This is part of a rise in trauma admissions related to e-bikes and e-scooters. A New York City-based NYU Langone Health study published in April found nearly 7% of trauma admissions were associated with electric mobility devices.
3. Fewer than one-third of riders wore helmets and one-third of patients suffered traumatic brain injuries.
4. Among study patients, 69 were pedestrians struck by an electric mobility device, and they suffered brain injuries at nearly double the rate of riders.
