MasterCard, Rockefeller Foundation dedicate $50M to 'data science for social impact' philanthropy

The Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth and The Rockefeller Foundation are committing $50 million over the next five years to create Data Science for Social Impact, a collaborative philanthropy using data science to address global health and social issues, the Hastings Tribune reports.

The philanthropy will identify investment opportunities to expand the use of data science capabilities at non-profit, civic and government organizations. The goal is to support efforts that improve community programs, such as public transportation or disease diagnoses.

"Like the introduction of science to medicine 100 years ago transformed the delivery of health worldwide, we are poised to take the next big leap bringing data science to social impact," said Rajiv J. Shah, MD, president of The Rockefeller Foundation. "We're excited to invite partners from the public and private sectors to join Data Science for Social Impact and help us inspire a new generation of social sector leaders to use data for good."
