HHS funnels $6M into sexual assault prevention efforts on college campuses

HHS Office on Women's Health Tuesday awarded nine organizations with three years of funding to support efforts that spread awareness of sexual assault on college campuses and help establish effective policies for prevention.

The awards total $6 million over three years. The participating organizations will collaborate and provide technical assistance to campus-based organizations and those that are able to influence policy at the nation's universities.

"We see this program as a significant step toward our office's efforts to prevent violence against women," Nancy Lee., deputy assistant secretary for health-women's health and director of OWH, said in a statement. "The work from this program is essential to strengthening violence prevention policies that can be sustained on college campuses beyond this initiative."

The following nine organizations are participating:

  • Futures Without Violence (San Francisco)
  • Georgia Independent College Association (Atlanta)
  • Guam Coalition Against Sexual Assault & Family Violence (Hagatna, Guam)
  • Indiana Coalition to End Sexual Assault (Indianapolis)
  • University of Kansas Center for Research (Lawrence)
  • University of New Hampshire (Durham)
  • North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault (Raleigh)
  • Texas Women's University (Denton)
  • Men Can Stop Rape (Washington, D.C.)

The initiative is also intended to support recommendations made by the White House Task Force on Campus Sexual Assault's "Not Alone" and "It's On Us" campaigns.
