Researchers analyzed CDC data on suicides in the U.S. from 2000 to 2017.
They found suicide rates for boys ages 15-19 spiked 21 percent from 2016 to 2017, while suicide rates among girls ages 15-19 increased 8 percent in the same time period. Of the 6,241 suicides in 2017, researchers note 5,016 of them were men.
Experts do not know yet if 2017 is the beginning of a larger trend or an anomaly, according to the report.
