Numerous hospitals and health systems have announced new or expanded physician residency programs in 2026 to broaden training opportunities for medical students and strengthen their market’s pipeline of future physicians.
Below are 15 hospitals and health systems launching, announcing or restructuring programs in 2026.

- Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas, launched a pediatrics residency program July 1.
- ECU Health in Greenville, N.C., launched a new four-year ophthalmology residency program, welcoming its inaugural class of three students on June 25.
- Florida State University College of Medicine is sponsoring the family medicine residency program and family medicine-obstetric fellowship program at Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside in Jacksonville, Fla. The hospital also opened a satellite obstetric clinic at Ascension St. Vincent’s Southside on May 12, which will be staffed through the fellowship.
- HCA Florida Capital Hospital in Tallahassee and UCF College of Medicine will welcome 15 residents to its new transitional year residency program this month.
- Hudson Regional Health in Secaucus, N.J., and New York Medical College in Valhalla announced an orthopedic surgery residency program at Bayonne (N.J.) University Hospital on May 1. The program received ACGME accreditation and will welcome its inaugural class this summer.
- Huntsville (Texas) Memorial Hospital and Tri-County Behavioral Healthcare in Conroe, Texas, is launching a psychiatry residency program in July.
- Lakewood Health System in Staples, Minn., and the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis announced a new rural family medicine residency program April 27. The three-year program will train two family medicine physicians per year, with the first cohort set to begin in summer 2027.
- Maury Regional Health in Columbia, Tenn., and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tenn., are launching an internal medicine residency program in July.
- McLeod Health is launching an internal medicine residency program at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, S.C., in July.
- Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge welcomed its inaugural class of 15 students to its new internal medicine residency program in June.
- Monroe, La.-based St. Francis Medical Center, part of FMOL Health, will launch a family medicine residency program in July.
- Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health will launch two obstetrics-gynecology residency programs at Sutter Roseville (Calif.) Medical Center and Oakland, Calif.-based Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in July. The system will also launch a family medicine rural residency program at Crescent City, Calif.-based Sutter Coast Hospital and a neurology residency program at Sutter Roseville Medical Center this year, according to Roseville Today.
- USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and Tampa General Behavioral Hospital have launched a new psychiatry residency program, the organizations said in March. The four-year program will begin this summer with an initial cohort of three residents.
- Valley Health in Winchester, Va., is launching an internal medicine residency program at Winchester Medical Center in July.
- Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, Ark., and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences are launching emergency medicine and neurology residency programs in July.
