White House weighs direct-to-consumer drug discount website

The Trump administration is exploring the creation of a government website to connect patients directly with pharmaceutical companies offering discounted prescription drugs, according to people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported Sept. 19.

The proposed platform, possibly dubbed “TrumpRx,” would allow Americans to search for specific medications and access deals directly from drugmakers, which will bypass traditional pharmacies and pharmacy benefit managers.

The plan remains under discussion and has not been finalized. However, it is tied to a broader effort by the Trump administration to cut drug costs. In July, President Donald Trump issued 17 letters to major drugmakers demanding immediate price reductions for Medicaid covered medications at prices comparable to those overseas.

Several drugmakers, including Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Bristol Myers Squibb and Roche, have begun to explore or implement direct-to-consumer models. Eli Lilly offers discounted access to weight loss drugs through a telehealth platform and Pfizer and Bristol Myers Squibb launched a platform for their blood thinner Eliquis.
