The University of Hawaii at Hilo Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy in Hilo has launched its first distance-learning track for the doctor of pharmacy degree, welcoming 12 students this month.
The extended online PharmD-XO pathway is designed for students with personal or professional responsibilities that prevent them from relocating to Hilo, according to a Jan. 12 university news release. Students will take classes online for 4 1/2 years and complete in-person practice experiences, including eight advanced rotations during their final year.
Leaders said the program offers a needed option for island communities, allowing students to continue working in their communities while earning their degree. The next PharmD-XO cohort will begin in spring 2027. The college is currently recruiting for its on-campus fall 2026 class.
