Spending on specialty pharmaceuticals continues to rise in the U.S. as the number of patients combating complex, chronic conditions increases, and drugmakers focus their development efforts on treatments for more complex diseases.

Below is a rank of the top 15 pharmacies that generated the most revenue from dispensing specialty pharmaceuticals in 2018, according to the Drug Channels Institute.

1. CVS Specialty/ Aetna Specialty Pharmacy — $37 billion

2. Accredo/ Freedom Fertility/ Cigna Specialty Pharmacy — $30.7 billion

3. Alliance Rx Walgreens Prime / Walgreens stores — $19.6 billion

4. BriovaRx (owned by UnitedHealth Group's OptumRx) — $16.8 billion

5. Diplomat Pharmacy — $4.8 billion

6. Humana Specialty Pharmacy — $3.2 billion

7. Kroger Specialty Pharmacy / Kroger stores — $2.8 billion

8. Specialty Pharmacy Solutions (owned by McKesson) — $1.6 billion

9. U.S. Bioservices (owned by AmerisourceBergen) — $1.4 billion

10. Walmart Specialty Pharmacy — $1 billion

11. SenderraRx — $800 million

12. PANTHERx —$700 million

13. BioPlus Specialty Pharmacy Services — $700 million

14. Onco360/ CareMed — $600 million

15. Amber Pharmacy/ Hy-Vee Pharmacy Solutions — $500 million
