St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colo., part of SCL Health, has opened a new, 10,000-square-foot pharmacy, local NBC affiliate KKCO reported March 9.

The pharmacy was a four-year project meant to improve medication dispensing and enhance safety. It features a new box picker, the largest one within SCL Health, to store and sort medications.

“This allows our techs to efficiently pick products safely,” Rudy Bormann, the hospital’s pharmacy director, told KKCO. “That’s the number one thing that when we looked at automation — it’s not so much about efficiencies [and] capacity, but also safety … When you have six techs filling reports for replenishing our units upstairs, there’s a lot of manual touches and that’s human error. We want to minimize human error.”
