A small strip mall pharmacy in Florida was the site of a $1.2 million health insurance fraud scheme, according to the Miami Herald.
Elaine Hurtado, co-owner and manager of Rx Health Pharmacy, is set to be released from prison in 2021, after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud earlier this year. She owes the state $1.26 million in restitution, and had her pharmacy technician's license suspended by the state health department.
Ms. Hurtado, along with her husband, Eusebio Huici, reportedly submitted false claims for healthcare benefits, which were never given to Medicare/Medicaid beneficiaries. Most of the claims were for prescription drugs, according to the Miami Herald.
Mr. Huici has already spent six months in prison after pleading guilty to the same charge as Ms. Hurtado. He owes the state $98,843 in restitution.
Mayrelis Lopez, Rx Health Pharmacy's only officer and agent, is also serving prison time for conspiracy to pay healthcare kickbacks.
