Roche’s Genentech lays off 265 as plant closure nears

Genentech, Roche’s biotech company based in South San Francisco, is closing a plant and laying off 265 workers, Mercury News reported March 25.

The manufacturing facility makes commercial drugs and cancer therapies, Genentech told the news outlet. The biotech merged with Roche in 2009, and the soon-to-close South San Francisco plant is on the same campus as Roche’s headquarters for pharmaceutical operations in the U.S., according to Genentech’s site

The company said it will continue manufacturing operations and research and development in South San Francisco. It has four other locations: Louisville, Ky.; Hillsboro, Ore.; Vacaville, Calif.; and Oceanside, Calif.
