Millions of patients have taken the generic drug to treat high blood pressure, heart failure and other common conditions. However since last July, hundreds of lots of valsartan, irbesartan and losartan were recalled for containing potentially carcinogenic impurities.
The impurities will spur about 2,000 personal injury cases to be filed in the next two years by patients claiming the drugs caused harm, personal injury attorney Daniel Nigh told a U.S. federal court.
So far, 40 companies, including Teva Pharmaceuticals, Mylan and CVS Health, have been sued over the generic drugs.
