Publix betting big on in-hospital pharmacies

Supermarket Chain Publix has partnered with Halifax Health to build a retail pharmacy inside one of its hospitals. It will be Publix’s 13th in-hospital pharmacy in Florida.

The full-service pharmacy will be in the Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., and is expected to open in August.

“When patients leave the hospital or emergency department, they will easily be able to obtain their medication. We know convenience helps drive better health outcomes, and this pharmacy program provides that convenience,” said Jeff Feasel, Halifax Health president and CEO.

Publix teamed up with Beaufort (S.C.) Memorial Hospital last year to deliver prescriptions to patients before hospital discharge.

The grocer said it is looking for opportunities to collaborate with other health systems in its seven-state operating area to open pharmacies or expand pharmacy services.
