OhioHealth Morrow County Hospital in Mount Gilead, Ohio, is switching its automated dispensing cabinets from Pyxis to Omnicell as part of the health system’s broader push to improve medication safety.
The upgrade allows any OhioHealth hospital to view the medications available at Morrow County Hospital, improving coordination during shortages, overstock situations and urgent needs, according to an Aug. 24 news release. Pharmacists at OhioHealth Grady Memorial Hospital can also remotely verify orders, view inventory and help nurses locate medications when Morrow County Hospital’s pharmacy is not staffed on-site.
The Omnicell cabinets also strengthen medication safety and security through enhanced controlled substance documentation, oversight and inventory management.
The upgrade is part of a nearly $13 million, five-year investment OhioHealth has made in Morrow County Hospital’s technology, services and patient experience since the 25-bed critical access hospital became the system’s 16th full member hospital in January 2025. The investment also included $6 million to transition the hospital to Epic earlier this year. Morrow County Hospital President Mike Hyek said the pharmacy investment reflects the system’s commitment to improving technology and services at the county’s only hospital.
“It’s really important to OhioHealth that if we’re going to be present in the county, we deliver the best patient experience that we can, and part of that is the capital investment that we make into the facility,” he said.
