The fire started from an electrical malfunction on countertops within the outpatient pharmacy at Springfield Regional Medical Center and caused water and smoke damage to part of the pharmacy. The cause of the malfunction is unclear, and the incident is under investigation.
“The incident was contained to nonpatient areas, and at no time did the incident impact current patients, visitors or staff on-site,” Mercy Health said in a statement to the News-Sun.
No injuries were reported, and the fire was contained to the pharmacy.
Matt Smith, assistant fire chief of the Springfield Fire Rescue Division, told the News-Sun that the early estimate of the damage is $8,000, including property and pharmacy content.
Mercy Health told the News-Sun that most damaged areas were cleaned and operational before the start of the business day, but the meds-to-beds program was closed as crews cleaned up water damage.
