Novo Nordisk unveiled its 2030 strategic targets at a Capital Markets Day in London Sept. 21, aiming to reassure investors it can navigate looming patent expirations for semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, according to a Sept. 21 report from the Financial Times.

Here are five things to know:

  1. Novo aims to launch more than five drugs with “multi-blockbuster” potential by 2030 and generate more than $23 billion in risk-adjusted pipeline sales by 2035, including current pipeline assets.
  1. The company is targeting at least five phase 3 programs in obesity and diabetes and at least five more in other therapy areas, part of a push to diversify beyond a portfolio that draws more than 90% of sales from diabetes and obesity treatments.
  1. Management outlined a multiyear rollout of next-generation obesity injectables: a CagriSema combination launch early next year, followed by standalone cagrilintide and high-dose CagriSema in 2028 and zenagamtide after that.
  1. Novo said it plans to reach more than 60 million patients globally by 2030 and scale manufacturing capacity tenfold to supply oral obesity therapies to 15 million patients by the end of the decade. Its oral Wegovy pill has already reached a record 7 million U.S. prescriptions.
  1. The targets come as Novo faces increasing competition from Eli Lilly, which extended its lead in the GLP-1 market in the second quarter, reporting $22.97 billion in revenue, up 48% year over year, compared with Novo’s roughly $12.3 billion.
